Chapter 3 A Defender Is Born

I don’t remember much of my past, but the first memory I have was the moment I saw light. I remember being trapped in darkness just an endless sea of darkness with no sign of it ending. I don’t remember how I ended up in this darkness or anything before then was a mystery. I remember the first words I heard “Happy birthday David!”
I was being heaved up out the darkness and the world around me opened up. It was the first time I saw colours and shapes, so much new information was flowing into me.  Yet I somehow picked everything up very quickly. My eyes were being bombarded with colours. It was as if my eyes became a vacuum sucking up all the colours of the world directly into them.
I thought my mind was going to pop like a balloon I was being pumped up with so much information at such a fast rate.  Then I felt it a sensation unlike any other there was no words that could sum-up the sensation I was feeling. I found myself being held by tiny little hands and looking up a huge head that was not in preposition to its very titchy body. It was a strange moment seeing a baby for the first time, followed by watching its saliva runs down off its mouth into my eyes.  This was then followed by a bunch of words that even I to this day could not comprehend. It had its own unique language. It was in this moment that I found myself being flattened into his chest. I could hear the beating of what sounded like a little drum, being played by the world’s smallest drummer.  This sound resonated inside me, this simple beat made something click. I did not know what it was at the time, but as I looked up into the baby’s warm brown eyes I saw bright burning blue flames.
“I think David likes his teddy bear, what you going call it David?” The words that came out David month if you can call them words, or maybe they were words from another race of human on a different planet I think it might have been a name but at the time, I was just mesmerised by the blue flams shinning in his eyes what did they mean?  Oh I remember he said pa or something along them lines.
David turns me around to face two very tail humans arched over us with gleaming white teeth as I look up at them. I quickly realised there relationship to David.  I checked each of their eyes I did not see any blue flams in ether of their eyes.  At the time I wondered if his parents could see the flams too. However that thought was quickly put to rest when she lend into pick up David and she gazed right into his eyes  and smiled. Then I believe she tried to talk in the same language as the baby. Her voice sounded like it has been pump full of helium.  “Who my good little boy!” she said this a few times, her mouth got longer each time. To be honest I had no idea if David liked this or not. But I knew she was not seeing blue fire in his eyes.
Only once David had nodded off to sleep and his parents had left too, was I finally able to get a good look at my surroundings. I noticed I was trapped with blue wooden bars on either side of me. I looked up to see shapes spinning around above me. There was a window that I could see though the bars just on the other side of the room.  I could see the sun setting, outside the sky was like a burning candle getting dimer as the sun set for the day. I did not know it then but this was going be the night I would learn what really lurks in the dark.

I sat next to David about to drift off to sleep when I heard a thump from under the cot. My eyes shot open. “Did he not feel that?” I thought to myself then I heard it again only it was much louder this time, another thump from under the cot. This time I felt the cot shake.  I walked over to the side and put my paws around the bars. I tried fitting my head through the bars but it was hopeless. The gap was too small. I turned back to look at David. He was still fast asleep when I heard a sound of giggling. And then one more thump that was so powerful it knocked me off my legs. I fell flat on my face, down into the soft cushions in the cot. I picked myself back up and heard the giggling ones more, whatever this thing was it was toying with me.
It was then I saw a single small hand arise from the under the cot. It slowly enclosed its mini fingers one by one around the bars as the second hand emerged. I stood there wondering what I should do. I could feel the fur slowly rising on my body. The hands begin to pull themselves up the bars before long a bald head pocked up next.  It was hideous, I got a good look at it as it gazed on at me and give a big cherisher grin. Its eyes where as black as black could get, there was not a single bit of light in them, and as it opened its mouth it began drooling with a crimson liquid. There were no teeth in sight. It climbs higher revealing its naked body that made me take a step back. Its tiny body had all its organs on display. The heart was beating right out in the open it had skin but all its organs were on show, like looking though a glass window. It let out another chuckle as it had reached the top looking down at me.
It was then that it bent its legs down and jettisoned up on the celling now it was way up high. All I could do was watch as it crawled along the wall constantly keeping its smile on me. What was this thing?  “What do you want” I said out loud. It giggled ones more. I remember exactly what happened next it will forever be burnt into my mind. The red drool dropping above David’s head, as it opened its mouth much wider this time to stick its hand inside. It began making a regulating noise as if all its origins were about to be vomited up out of its body. If only that was what happened next then it would have been the end of it.
However that is not how these things play, they are twisted and as I learnt on that night they only want one thing, people’s souls. For what proposes I still don’t know to this day.   Its hand pulled out another bald head with another mouth only this one was much smaller. It was just a little bit bigger than its mini hand.  Now attached to what looked like its tongue it reached down and open its mouth. It was in this moment that I saw the blue flam beginning to dim in David’s eyes. David began scramming. At this time I was unaware what was happening but I knew I had to stop it. But how could I stop it? I was trembling I was so very weak back then.  I am not sure how it happened but my only though in that moment was to protect him. “Defend the boy!”  Something inside me yelled. I blinked and I was holding some kind of small silver sword that felt like it was a perfect fit for my paw.  It had just magically materialised. Everything was happening so fast my mind was not thinking no more only acting.
My legs were moving like I was not in control of my own body anymore. I bent my knees down and jumped. The cot was almost like a spring board. I raised the sword a scintillating light radiated from the sword as I swiped the sword through the tongue.  Within seconds I heard what sounded like a cry mixed with a yell. This was followed by half a tongue and a tiny head flopping around on the cot until it just stopped, and disintegrated before my eyes.

The other half rolled its self-back up into the things month spewing out a trail of its body fluids on the way back to its mouth.  I pointed the sword at the deformed thing on the wall “if you come any closer to David you won’t just lose your tongue” I said. While thinking my voice sounded so powerful it was not my own voice. It was deep and strong.  The thing on the wall lost its smile and now screamed as it crawled down the wall while keeping its eyes lock on the sword. I followed it with the sword. “Go back from where you came from, and stay away from the child!” it drop onto the floor and crawled back under the cot. But it constantly kept its dark eyes locked onto the sword in my paw.
I wanted to get out the cot and follow where it was going, but as soon as it had crawled out of my eyesight. I felt a large gust of wind almost knocked me on my keens and it was gone. What was that thing?  I was still holding the sword in my hand. It was only now that I got a good look at it, I saw the word defender embedded into the sword.   I said the word out loud and the sword just vanished from my paw before my eyes.  I was left looking at my now empty paw.
It was then that David rolled onto his side to facing me. His face was at peace now no longer was he screaming just blissfully snoring away.  It was only then while looking at him that I had realised how sleepy I was and I placed myself back in his arms and went to sleep.
The next day I was awoken by the screaming and heard David mother come flying into the room. I thought for sure she was going scream at the blood all over the floor. But to my surprise she said nothing. As if she could not see it. I was laying very still in that moment. “Awww, what’s wrong? Did my baby have a nightmare?” she said in a silly voice. David laughed, it was in this moment that I saw the blue flams in his eyes had damped a tad. I did not know what this meant at the time, but I knew something bad must happen if the flams in his eyes go out.
From that point on I decide that I would protect, no! Defend, David from what Mirabel called them nightmares.  Each and every night a new nightmare would come knocking, all after the same thing the blue flams in David’s eyes. If I was lucky some nights nothing would show up and sometimes after a while they would just see me sitting there and hightail it back to where they came from. Wherever that was I still do not know.  I have tried following them on multiple occasions, only to find that they have vanished in a gust of wind, all in the same place, under the bed at the very back.  After a while I stopped trying. I realised it became pointless, because the magic sword would always disappear ones it's work was done for the night. It comes as goes when it pleases almost like it has a mind of its own.
I stated to notice as David grew order so did the nightmares. They got nastier and stronger but I was always their always watching his back, and thought I always would be. I got to cocky thinking they were no match for me. If I had been less arrogant maybe things would not have turned out the way they did.
