Sleeping defender
Chapter 1 In The Box
Your parents have always said. “That
it’s just a nightmare it’s not real, go back to sleep.” What if I was to tell
you ever night while you are lying fast asleep in bed with them warm blanket’s
covering you, making you feel safe. That you put your life in imminent danger
that what your parents have told you is a lie. Would you be so quick to jump
into them breeding grounds that feed on your souls, that you call beds, if you
knew the truth?
Well you might be asking
yourself, but I go bed every night and wake up just fine the next day. Your
just talking rubbish is what you’re thinking right now. That because what your
unaware of is what takes place in the dead of night while you’re pretty eyes
are closed. Life and death battles are faced with your worst nightmares. Now,
you might be asking. who fights those battles for you? Well it’s me of course;
it’s my job to defend you. Well not you but that kid with scruffy brown hair
and pale looking face, with those innocent chestnut eyes, who can barely tie
his own shoes, his parents call him Samuel, and my name, we’ll let’s just say
it’s too hard for your human dialect to comprehend.
It’s my first day on the Job. Well it will be if they let me
out this dam cardboard prison. “Hey let me out, He will die without me!”
“Are you babbling on about being
a defender again, let it go old timer. How many timesss are you going talk to
yourself, No one’ssss coming for you or me?”
Her voice echoed across the walls of the box just as her body did. “Get it
in your furry little head! No one is coming! You’re a Hasss been, you could not
sssave David and you won’t be able to sssave Sssamuel.” Her irritating squeaking laugh ratted along
with that dam bell on her tail as she moved around. “Shut it, you reptilian squeaker.”
I could feel her repulsive foul hiss
spray into my face. Her breath smelled so bad it was probably like a sewage
system inside that tube tunnel. She wormed
her way back over to the other side of the box, hissing away to herself. I walk over to the faint bit of light casting
though the centre of the box. “How many
days has it really been since they put me in this hell?” I lay down under the faint crack of light, I whisper
under my breath David I’m sorry.
I awake to find myself laying in some
kind of water. I put my paws into the liquid. I lift them up to the light, my
paw’s shake. “No, no, not this, not the blood! Not the blood!” I put my foot forward already feeling the
blood under my feet. “No please
stop!” I roar at the top of my voice.
“David!”
My eye shot open to the sound of that rattling
bell jiggling in my ears. “I could not take your endlesss ssssleep talking, you
old kook.” I let out a sigh, just another
nightmare. I thought to myself. I sat up it was pitch black no longer any
light in the box. There were silences
other than the normal sound of a snoring child. But that did not last long as
it happened ever night. The snoring is broken by a cry from Samuel’s lungs.
Tonight though the screaming was louder then it normally was. I could hear it more clearly than ever
before.
My paws bashed away on the
cardboard walls one paw after the other. I yell. ”He needs me Please, please,
please just let me save him…” I continue to bang on the wall, would it
eventually give way? “Give it up, old
bear how many more nightssss are you going to try and get out of here? They are
not coming you might as well enjoy your retirement. It was at that moment I could feel the anger
bubbling inside. I felt like a wind up car about to be let loose. Her squeaking
laugh arose from her mouth. That was the final push.
My legs started moving as I let
out a loud growl running across the box I charged at her. It was too dark to
see her face but I am sure it had a look of surprise as I jump onto her body
and pulled at her tail. “You listen to
me you oversized dog toy, I will get out of here, and I will be the defender
that child needs! Am I making myself clear!?”
I said as I almost ripped off her bell from her tail “Ow yesss
cryssstal.” she said as I heard her as she wiggled over to the other side.
Samuel continues to scream his
screams growing louder. Why won’t his
parents come in the room? Surely they hear the screaming. I scratch at the
wall ones more hoping to break though. But too no success not even a single dent
was made. The screaming was only getting louder. How much soul would he have left after tonight? I did not want to think about it I was
helpless to save him. Just outside this box was a sound of rattling. It sounded
like heavy metal chains being drag across the wooden floor? What terrible nightmare was hatching and, inching
its way to Samuel bed? Samuel let out one more deafening scream, before the lights
flicked on and I heard Samuel father’s deep gruff voice. “Wake up Samuel, son! Wake up! You’re having
a nightmare.” Samuel farther from what I could only guess was trying to wake
him by shaking his shoulders. It was
then that he called out “Mirabel, Mirabel!”
I heard her rush into the bedroom. She let out a scream. I could only guess
at what they were seeing. Most likely his eye lids twitching rapidly
and his body writhing. To any parent it would look like
their child is having a stroke. Mirabel yelled
to Arthur “Call 999” I knew the truth though it was Samuel soul struggling to
stay inside his body as whatever nightmare was trying to collect it looming over
his bedside.
Samuel mother
called out to him again and again she tryed shaking him and even throwing
water on to him. Samuel would not wake up. He was losing more and more of
his soul as the seconds rolled on.I knew
there were only two ways a nightmare would stop and that is if I could battle it
and win. The other way was holding out tell daybreak. They have to crawl back
under the bed when day break's hits. Since I am trapped
in here, holding out for day break is all I can do.I could not take it, how much of Samuel would
remain after tonight?
