Chapter 2 Out Of The Box

As the night progressed onwards all I could do was hear Mirabel panic to herself, as she waited for the doctor to arrive. I heard Arthur walk back into the room “I can’t lose another one.” Mirabel said to Arthur as I imaged his arms wrapped around her.
It was not long before the ambulances arrived and the Paramedics came rushing into the room. I knew this was a pointless case whatever they were going to do to him was hopeless. It was not long before I was hearing Marable yell “He’s not breathing!”
“Not breathing! “ I repeated to myself. CPR was not going save him and I knew that was what they were about to do. “Let me out, please, I can save him!” I bawled at the top of my lungs. But to no avail they could not hear me. To them my voice must have sounded like ant, humans are just not capable of hearing me. “We have to get him to the ambulances, right now. Help me lift him up.” I heard one of the paramedics say. Then I heard it, the song of horror to all nightmares, the signal that their time is up. The sweet little twitter sound’s the signalling of daybreak. But had it come too late? I wondered to myself.  Panic took over; I heard a sound of a heavy object crash onto the bedroom floor. I heard something heavy being draged across scratching at the wooden floor.  “Such a delectable soul, I will be back tomorrow for the rest.” A whispering raspy voice swept across my ears. Was it talking to me?  Before I could think any longer I was interrupted by “Mirabel cry of joy yelling “stop, I think he’s opening his eyes.”
Although I could not see, I am sure he must have felt a lot of shock waking up to people he never seen before standing beside his bed about to carry him off it. “How are you feeling Samuel?”   It was not long after he woke up that I could hear the marching of feet everyone filed out. The room for what I could only assume was empty now and most likely harmless. In the day time I visualize his room being colourful vibrant blue walls. Not the sad dark mucky blue that they turn to at night. I know he loves to draw. And I just know he's got his drawings hung up all over the walls. And they must be quite good because Mirabel has complemented him many times on them and said “this is going on your wall!” in a really excited voice.
“You’re never going to sssee what’s outssside this box,Ssstop trying, I gave up a long time ago.”  That dam reptile squeaker was at it again. “Don’t make me pull that bell off all the way this time!” I bellowed across the box.  It was at this moment that I heard someone footsteps getting closer than normal like they were approaching the box. Out of nowhere I found myself looking up at the small ray of light that was now growing wilder as the flaps began to part. Even the toy snake was looking up.  My eye squinted at the amount of light being let inside the box.  Before my eye could adjust to the light I found myself being constricted by a humongous hand squishing my body as I felt my feet elevating off the ground of the box. It was finally happening freedom from this prison was within my grasp.
My face and body reminded very still I would not want to scare him. I can’t let a human know I am alive. It’s a rule we defenders have and all other life forms have. We are all very good at keeping motionless. You would not know it but we are all around hiding in all kinds of different body’s.
Now as I remained immobile and head pointed up as I gazed directly at Arthur my only thought was how gigantic humans could grow. Had it really been so long that I had forgotten just how ginormous a human was?  Arthur looked as though he had a black fussy rug wrapped around his face. ‘He has more fur than me, and I have it all over me.’ Arthur had deep brown bear eyes that looked down on me. His face seemed sad as they gazed down on me. His lips began to part “Hey honey, when are we going throw away this box of David’s stuff. It’s been a year already, besides the only thing’s that remain in it, Is this teddy bear, and rolls dog toy!” he yelled. His voice sounded like one of them mega phones that people yell out of at protests.  Throw me away! No you can’t! I have to save Samuel from the nightmares! ” I wanted to speak out but I knew it was against the rules of our kind. Was this my future being tossed away to live the rest of my days on the street, to wind up in some old dump yard. Mirabel yelled down the hallway “There a black bag in the hallway just put the stuff in there I’ll take it to the dump later.”
This was it, I felt each one of Arthur’s heavy steps pound away in my ears, as he draw near the black bag. He walked into the hallway I could not help but noticed the huge mirror we passed that hung in the hallway. I saw my refection for the first time in a very long time. It was only for brief moment. But my fur was no longer the glowing light brown it ones was, it was now a dark dusty brown The colour you would relate to as humans call it shit.  There was now just a scar where one of my button eyes used to be. All I could see out of now was just the one eye. My body was getting older that was clear now; maybe I really was too old to be the great defender I once was.
We stopped walking. My time had come, Arthur dangled me over the bag by my feet and head pointing down. I looked into it's abyss, all I could see was darkness. Just like the box but this time I knew, it was lights out for good. I found myself coming to terms with my fate. This was going to be my grave. After all I had a good run as a defender in the beginning.
